Chicago, IL is one of the most exciting places to raise a family in America. The area boasts so many fun activities for young children that it’s hard to pick the top ten. But whether you hail from Bucktown, River North, or the West Loop, you know that there’s no lack of things to do and places to go in the Windy City. So, what are some of the main attractions and hidden gems that make downtown Chicago special for families?

1. You are members of the Kohl Children’s Museum

Early childhood educators know the importance of engaging, interactive play that encourages curiosity, and Kohl Children’s Museum offers just that! Learning meets fun as children take on engineering tasks in a room full of giant building blocks. They can also explore the scientific properties of H2O at a waterworks exhibit or sculpt a masterpiece at the Adventures in Art corner. In addition to their permanent exhibits, special art, science, and reading programs are included with museum admission.

2. Your children know every nook and cranny of the Lincoln Park Zoo

What better way to teach your child about the power of nature than to immerse them in it? The Lincoln Park Zoo will transport them all over the world, showing them how animals from near and far live and adapt to their environments. The zoo features children’s programs, manicured gardens, and a wide variety of different animal species.

3. You and your family love the churros from WhirlyBall Chicago

Active Chicago families LOVE WhirlyBall Chicago! You can go bowling or grab a bite to eat, but there’s so much more. This whole place is focused on play, so you can stop by for Jenga, cornhole, ping pong, and even laser tag. We hear the “U Shake It” crispy churro bag is a crowd-pleaser with toddlers and preschoolers.

4. You’ve conducted an experiment at Kids Science Labs

Kids Science Labs (KSL) was designed by two engineering fathers who saw the need to engage children in S.T.E.A.M. concepts early. KSL programs combine inspiring learning environments and passionate teachers to provide hands-on science and engineering lessons that are fun and accessible. From classes to camps to birthday parties, KSL has something for everyone.

5. You’ve played in the sand at North Avenue Beach

The little beach lover in your life always has a blast at North Avenue Beach. One of Chicago’s most popular spots, this beach includes an ocean liner-inspired beach house that boasts one of the best views in the city. You can take a break from playing in the sand to visit one of the many local restaurants and other attractions that North Avenue Beach has to offer!

6. You’ve gone on countless tours of the U-505 submarine at The Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is described by parents as “hands-on” and “mind-blowing.” Children love the state-of-the-art exhibits, including tornados, Tesla coils, and the world’s largest display of LEGO art. The Giant Dome Theater immerses families in a world of learning, transporting them to faraway places like Antarctica—or even another galaxy! If you haven’t been in a few months, take a look at the museum’s event calendar to plan your family’s next adventure.

7. A butterfly has landed on you (or your little one) at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

If your child loves the outdoors, you know that one of their favorite places is the Nature Museum. It features engaging exhibits and programs for children that connect toddlers and preschoolers to the world. A few favorite activities are Critter Connection, animal feeding, butterfly releases, and nature-inspired playscapes. Bonus for parents: the butterfly enclosure is also a venue for yoga classes!

8. You’ve climbed into the clouds at the Chicago Children’s Museum at Navy Pier

Chicago families love the towering Cloud Buster exhibit, which features 37 feet of structural steel. Children can climb all the way into the sky and feel like they’re touching the clouds. Other popular exhibits include the Art Studio, where children can express their artistic imaginations, and the Dinosaur Exhibition, where mini-archeologists dig up ancient relics. Sure, it’s called the Chicago Children’s Museum, but we know a few adults who are pretty fond of it as well.

From the serene 5-acre Lurie garden to outdoor art exhibits and special events, there’s something exciting happening here every season. Check out the park’s mobility center at HUB312 for bike rentals, or grab an electric scooter to take in all the sites with the wind in your hair.
